Review of Album See That Light

Stripped-to-the-bone rock and blues laced with particularly personal sounding lyric sets is the tasty fare served up by guitarist Rick Holmstrom.  The Venice CA-based bandleader for Mavis Staples made good use of a tour-less stretch steering a back-to-the-basics trio format into varied roots-bound regions.  Fretwork is consistently mood-appropriate: whether the uncomplicated articulation of the ballad “Lonesome Sound” or the bite of the acerbic “Keep It Hid”.  Grooves are a treat throughout; kudos to always-in-the-pocket drummer Steve Mugalian.
