Review of Album Sugar Hip Ya Ya

By the time Dionne Bennett dims the lights with the steamy reggae track “My Life”, she’s thoroughly rocked the listener with a trio of burners including a rave-up workout on the Etta James-popularized “Tell Mama”. A natural soul scorcher of the Tina Turner variety, the British/West Indian vocalist is consistently strong on a set primarily built on producer Little G Weevil-penned originals.  Other tracks of note include “Get Style”, “Spy Me” and the title track.
