Review of Album Up Next

The blues gets a welcome whiff of youthful exuberance with the drop of Mathias Lattin’s new offering.  The Houston-based guitarist/vocalist, barely into his twenties, injects here-and-now flair into an original song list impressively grounded in classic blues turf, taking the occasional soulful side trip as well. Savvy, beyond-his-years vocal and instrumental delivery shows up with the smoldering leadoff track, “Who’s Been Loving On You” and the up-tempo “You Know This Won’t Do”.  A chord pattern that could have slipped out of Bobby Womack’s song book adorns the urgent ballad “I Tried So Hard” on which Mr. Lattin’s axework shapeshifts into rock mode. A Best Of Year candidate based on its freshness alone.
