His voice and axe work shout “down home blues” but Willie J. Laws Jr. doesn’t stop there, dosing these sounds with contemporary flair and some here-and-now messaging.  The Texas-bred blues vet gets to it here with an old-school leadoff track, “Regl’ Ol’ Blues”, later serving up a breezy, ear-catching funk groove on “Stuck In Traffic” and dropping some dead-serious commentary on “Getcha Knee Off My Neck” and “Ain’t Going To Texas”.  Mr. Laws’ backup band provides a most suitable deep blues setting.
