If Philly doesn’t make one’s list as a hotspot for Southern sounds, harmonica player/songwriter James Day could readily provide a needed update. The Biloxi-born transplant proves himself an eclectic roots purveyor, interspersing original Gulf Coast-flavored fare with equally tasty, rock-solid blues, taking the occasional side trip as well. Day’s congenial front man comportment is contrasted with an aggressive and agile harp attack. His capable four-piece backup unit is enhanced with punchy horns and sweet vocal backup when called for. Guitarist Mark Shewchuk has his moments as well. Standout tracks include the Crescent City-styled “Chain of Pain”, the blues shuffle “Time & Money” and the self-explanatory “Zydeco Boogaloo”.
