If Cecile Doo-Kingue’s dusky tenor vocals don’t quite hit the deep regions of a Joan Armatrading or an Odetta, she’s certainly close enough to conjure the same strong, all-grown-up female persona that marks the work of those greats. The Cameroon-born, Montreal-based folksinger displays a sharp eye, a warm heart and red-hot blood at various moments through her lyric sets as well. Protests of very recent vintage- “Six Letters” and “Bloodstained Vodka” should find airplay and outlets that can handle the explicitness of “Make Me” just might find it irresistible.
