Review of Album The Outsider

The pairing of Beth Packer’s enchanting, instantly distinctive vocal style and the always sparing accompaniment, never much more than partner Clinton Hough’s ideally suited guitar atmospherics, make for a most original appropriation of blues, jazz and other things- and one compelling and unique musical presence.  Ms. Packer’s lyric sets, frequently dark but not always so, lie in wait, providing a second wave of seduction.  Standout tracks on a fascinating set overall include “Carousel”, “Monster Swan Blues” and “Gonna Be Rain”.
