Review of Album Blow

 

Drawing from both his dad’s storied tradition and from his and his band’s own creative reservoir, Louis Prima, Jr. here serves up jump swing, r&b, upbeat pop and cross-pollinations thereof, typically raising the roof in the process. And if the full-throttle blowing of this outfit isn’t enough, the fresh sounding, band-penned tunes that are the primary fare can catch on quickly and bring one back for another listen. Saxophonist Marco Palos is a standout soloist and Leslie Spenser proves a most suitable Prima band chanteuse, featured on the soul ballad “Someday”.  “New Orleans” is a solid airplay candidate and Jr.’s duet with his dad’s 1959 vocal and trumpet on “That’s My Home” is a nice inclusion. One of this year’s classier releases.
